Technical Trading Alert Technical Trading Alert American Greetings Corporation (NYSE: AM) Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 Tony Golan Chief Technical Analyst Stockprofit.com™ American Greetings Corporation (NYSE: AM) is reversing a long-term down-trend into a strong new long-term up-trend. The stock is now making higher highs and higher lows above the 200-day moving average (the red line in the chart above). Relative Strength Differential (RSD), our proprietary indicator for selecting super-strong stocks (the green histogram on the above chart), is well above the 25% threshold line, indicating AM is outperforming the S&P 500 by a wide enough margin to be considered as a candidate for a buy. AM started the current long-term up-trend when it made a low at 6.33 while still below the 200-day moving average in late June, marked as point 1 on the chart. From there, AM rallied sharply to a high of 12.33 in early July, labeled as point 2 on the chart. AM consolidated for a few days, then rallied again on Tuesday (point 3 on the chart), closing above the previous high with a medium-sized white candlestick and at a new high for the current long-term up-trend on above-average and rising volume. AM looks like it wants to go higher in the short-term. At a new high, this setup is good for a daytrade only. Daytraders would want to buy AM only when it goes .02 above Tuesday’s high, but not if it gaps up or triggers in the first 30 minutes. Therefore, if AM doesn't go above 13.10 before 10am EST Wednesday morning, place an order to buy AM at 13.10 Stop Day. Then, as soon as your order is filled, immediately place a stop order to sell AM .03 below whatever the low of the day is at the time the order triggers. Then, if the stock continues to rally throughout the day, keep raising your GTC sell-stop until the stock gets sold automatically or exit your position at the close.
